Back My Work had a sit down session with one of our talented creators, a bass guitarist, Basswalker, and he let us in on his creative process, his journey through music and his current plans and next music projects.
Q – Tell us a bit about you and your journey through music
A – Hi, my name is Udoka Moses Augustus, my stage name is Basswalker, I’m a bass guitarist and I play the guitar also. I started off by playing the drums.
Q – How did you pick up the bass guitar?
A – Back in 2011, there were a lot of people playing drums. All my friends were playing drums, but I kept wondering what I could do to be unique and not just follow the crowd.
I went to church, picked up a guitar and started learning how to play it. A woman in church asked me if I loved the instrument and I said I did. She then said I could take it to learn how to play better.
Since then, I haven’t stopped playing the guitar. I have also learned from listening to other good bassists and taking inspiration from them.
Q – Who do you look up to in the industry?
A – My role models are Victor Wooten and Richard Bona. I’ve been listening to them and they inspire me a lot in the art of bass playing.
Q – Have you worked with any artiste?
A – As a Bass guitarist, I have worked with many artistes such as Ige Sings, Karen, Jayce who is a music producer, Twitchpapi and many more.
Q – How would you describe your style of music?
A – I do bass covers of popular songs and I’m always trying to create my own sound. My bass sound is unique from what other people do. I want to inspire a lot of disabled people because people use being disabled as an excuse.
Q – You mentioned wanting to inspire disabled people. Can you tell us more about that?
A – I am someone who has webbed fingers, Syndactyly fingers. Whenever I play the guitar, people always wonder how I am able to do it.
In my opinion, that shouldn’t restrain you from playing a musical instrument, so I put in more work despite my disability so I can be as good as other bass players. I rehearse every day.
Q – What project are you currently working on?
A – Currently, I am working on a project called 40 KiloHertz. 40 KiloHertz is a unique project where I create new sounds from bass, from the lowends. It is to showcase who Basswalker is, and what sounds I can create with my bass guitar.
I do not just want to play for artistes but create my own unique sound.
Q – What should viewers expect from you?
