Talented rapper, lawyer, footballer, musician, performing artist and self acclaimed fresh guy, Sosa E, spoke to Back My Work about his journey through rap music in Nigeria.
He got into music from listening around, inspired by the society and environment he grew up in.
Sosa E decided to start rapping after being inspired by Kendrick Lamar, and M.I, noticing how flexible and versatile they were with words.
His career kicked off officially between 2017 and 2018, and by 2020 he had released ten original songs. Then in 2020, he had his biggest gig, which was a feature with music mogul, Olamide, on his E.P, 999. The track was titled ‘Dance with the Devil’.
Sosa E went on to record his own E.P, titled ‘Kung Fu Sosa’.
One of the tracks on the E.P, “S’il vous plaît” reflects a position in the rapper’s life where he knew he was talented and unwilling to be exploited by other creatives, to make music for free.
Another track on the E.P, ‘H.O.P’ was a song that was produced after he got a feature with Olamide. He talked about the torrent of hate, shade, betrayals and backbiting he got from a lot of people in his peer group and in the music space.
The rapper said “There was a time I was trending on Twitter because people were trying to insult my music. They said because I had not rapped for a long time and just started rapping in 2017, I did not deserve the accolades I was getting for my work.”
H.O.P was a response to all the naysayers, essentially urging them to wait their turn for success.
Sosa E is a part of the advocates who believe rap music should come back alive in Nigeria. He is looking to promote his music on a larger scale for the world to see.
